Health Benefits of Cooking at Home
Cooking at home can be a powerful tool to boost health. It allows you to choose your own ingredients (reducing salt, unhealthy fats, and forever chemicals found in ultra processed and typical fast foods). Here are some health benefits associated with home-cooked meals, along with tips to simplify meal preparation and have fun!
Health Benefits of Home-cooked Meals
Prepared, convenience and fast foods tend to be made with processed and ultra processed ingredients, including chemical additives (PFAS), added sugar and salt. These additives are linked to an increased risk of health issues, such as kidney & liver disease, altered immune function, obesity, high cholesterol, and depression. Restaurant meal portions are often larger, increasing calorie intake. Cooking at home takes planning and time, however, the benefits are worth it.
- Promotes Wholesome Ingredients – You can choose higher quality ingredients.
- Supports a Healthy Eating Pattern – Meals can be customized to meet dietary needs, preferences, food intolerances and/or allergies.
- Helps Control Portions — Results in reduced calorie intake & weight gain. Research shows five (5) or more home-cooked meals per week, compared to less than three (3) times per week, is linked to maintaining a healthy weight.
- Cost Savings – It is more economical than eating out. Even though grocery prices are higher now, their inflation rate is almost half that of restaurants.
- Mental Well-Being – Cooking can improve mental health, providing a sense of creativity & accomplishment.
- Encourages Social Interaction – Bringing together family & friends to prepare and share a meal supports enjoyment and relaxation.
Make the Most Out of Home Cooking
Cooking does not have to be a burden as one ages. Small modifications, such as planning ahead and simplifying meal prep, can support home-cooking and independence in the kitchen. It is a powerful tool to enhance health while continuing the enjoyment of cooking.
Keep it Quick & Simple – Less prep time and clean-up is perfect for low-energy days. One-pot meals and slow cookers are ideal. Use pre-cut & pre-washed ingredients. Start the slow cooker in the morning and dinner is ready by evening!
- Plan Ahead to save time, money and create a healthy meal plan. This eliminates the daily stress of deciding what to cook.
- Choose Recipes with Fewer Ingredients to simplify the cooking process. Reduce sodium and sugar to support health; use herbs and spices to enhance flavor.
- Stock Healthy Staples – Eggs, tuna, yogurt, low-sodium canned beans, frozen vegetables, fresh fruit and oatmeal.
- Cooking for One: Cook Once, Eat Twice – Enjoy leftovers for another meal, as cooking daily may not be practical. Cool quickly, reheat until piping hot, use within 2-3 days.
- Meal Delivery Services – Can provide healthy, quick meals with most of the prep done. Just put the ingredients together and cook. Some services even provide special dietary meals.
